Chapter Five – Gus’ has a bright idea

Not uncommonly, the following morning, I began a picture and even by my own standards this one was the most detailed that I could remember and as a consequence I was out of it for three hours. When I came to Nathan was back and just watching me over the small fire that had coffee brewing on it;

“Welcome back; I swear you left your body”

I smiled;

“What do you think?” I asked as I handed over the pad

He began to cry;

“What?” I asked gently

“This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen…”

I’d drawn a Comanche headdress, like the one Gus’ had, in near photographic quality, and every feather, upon very close inspection, revealed a different image of us, not just making love, but also riding, swimming and fishing;

“It’s like a diary” I offered

“It’s a fucking masterpiece…”

“I’m gonna ask Gus’ how the Comanche got married; maybe he’ll perform the ceremony”

“I don’t think they were that elaborate, very simple exchanges in fact”

“I don’t care; I just have to know that I’ve given myself to you and only you”

“Do you mean that, you never went with anyone else?”

“I know, and I never want to, you are everything I could ever, ever imagine having…and I don’t think anyone could love me more than you do”

The kiss alleviated the moment as it was in danger of precipitating the rains;

“Let’s go and see him” Nathan suggested after several minutes

We walked over to the house hand-in-hand; Gus knew the score and he didn’t mind that we were together;

“Gus’…” we called out

He appeared not long after;

“Hey fellas, what’s doin’?”

“Gus’, how did the Comanche get married?” I asked

“Come in”

We all, automatically, sat down at the table and helped ourselves to the coffee;

“…well, traditionally, a young man would approach the young woman’s father and offer gifts; horses, rope, powder, that kind of stuff and if the father was satisfied with the value of the goods he would allow the young man to take his daughter away; there was very little formality, compared to the way things are now; and she didn’t have a choice…”

“What if she didn’t like him?” I asked

“She might run away to another village with the man of her choice but then her “husband” would probably pursue them and kill them both…why did you want to know?”

I suddenly felt awkward so Nathan answered the question;

“We wanted to pledge ourselves to each other and no other”

“We’re worried too, that if one of us gets hurt the hospital might not let us stay with each other and if one of us should die then we’d have no say in how things were handled” I added

He studied our faces intently for about a minute and Gus’ had eyes that could bore holes in granite;

“Well, the Comanche Indian had nothing like that; they were warriors, looking for war; status and respect were earned on the battlefield and by the horses you owned; the ritual at someone’s death was very important; but if you’ve said the
