Chapter Five â Gusâ has a bright idea
Not uncommonly, the following morning, I began a picture and even by my own standards this one was the most detailed that I could remember and as a consequence I was out of it for three hours. When I came to Nathan was back and just watching me over the small fire that had coffee brewing on it;
âWelcome back; I swear you left your bodyâ
I smiled;
âWhat do you think?â I asked as I handed over the pad
He began to cry;
âWhat?â I asked gently
âThis is the most beautiful thing Iâve ever seenâ¦â
Iâd drawn a Comanche headdress, like the one Gusâ had, in near photographic quality, and every feather, upon very close inspection, revealed a different image of us, not just making love, but also riding, swimming and fishing;
âItâs like a diaryâ I offered
âItâs a fucking masterpieceâ¦â
âIâm gonna ask Gusâ how the Comanche got married; maybe heâll perform the ceremonyâ
âI donât think they were that elaborate, very simple exchanges in factâ
âI donât care; I just have to know that Iâve given myself to you and only youâ
âDo you mean that, you never went with anyone else?â
âI know, and I never want to, you are everything I could ever, ever imagine havingâ¦and I donât think anyone could love me more than you doâ
The kiss alleviated the moment as it was in danger of precipitating the rains;
âLetâs go and see himâ Nathan suggested after several minutes
We walked over to the house hand-in-hand; Gus knew the score and he didnât mind that we were together;
âGusââ¦â we called out
He appeared not long after;
âHey fellas, whatâs doinâ?â
âGusâ, how did the Comanche get married?â I asked
âCome inâ
We all, automatically, sat down at the table and helped ourselves to the coffee;
ââ¦well, traditionally, a young man would approach the young womanâs father and offer gifts; horses, rope, powder, that kind of stuff and if the father was satisfied with the value of the goods he would allow the young man to take his daughter away; there was very little formality, compared to the way things are now; and she didnât have a choiceâ¦â
âWhat if she didnât like him?â I asked
âShe might run away to another village with the man of her choice but then her âhusbandâ would probably pursue them and kill them bothâ¦why did you want to know?â
I suddenly felt awkward so Nathan answered the question;
âWe wanted to pledge ourselves to each other and no otherâ
âWeâre worried too, that if one of us gets hurt the hospital might not let us stay with each other and if one of us should die then weâd have no say in how things were handledâ I added
He studied our faces intently for about a minute and Gusâ had eyes that could bore holes in granite;
âWell, the Comanche Indian had nothing like that; they were warriors, looking for war; status and respect were earned on the battlefield and by the horses you owned; the ritual at someoneâs death was very important; but if youâve said the
